The Book and The Box: The Strain recap

First thing's first, sometimes in following some characters you forget how "bad ass" other characters are in The Strain . Last night's episode, "Madness" brought fans another Setrakian flashback when he was young enough to move quickly against Stragoi on the higher scale of The Master's army. Not only does he get the drop on one in the flashback scene, but he dispenses justice in a very Charles Bronson-esque way. The flashback helps explain that the book contained very important information on how exactly to defeat The Master. In a way, yes the book was dangerous and valuable to both sides, but exposing what was in it is the real weapon. If you did not see last night's episode, stop reading now. The spoiler is what was revealed last week , that the crimson worm which is The Master has to be destroyed or captured. Apparently there is a box that can be fabricated to do the job and Setrakian needs to know which body is holding his long time foe. ...

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) Review

" A Golan/Globus Film" Does that sound familiar to anyone? It might if you happen to be fan of anything related to the 80's.  Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) covers the history of the rise and fall of some of the best and worst classic films from The Cannon Group. They are responsible for a lot of cult classics like the Breakin' franchise, and the Deathwish films. They also helped launch the career of Chuck Norris, and a few other actors you might have seen in the Expendables films. While this documentary takes you down memory lane and briefly describes how Menahem Globus and Yoram Globus came to be the cult film classic titans they were, it seems to mostly be a bash session from a lot of their former employees. Still, the stories you hear from a lot of the interviewees are interesting, funny, and concerning. It is also nice to see how a lot of the actors look now compared to how we remember them from their films. There was ...

Lethal Weapon on Fox: Pilot Review

If you're an 80's connoisseur like we are here, you know that two films hold a special place in our hearts every Christmas .   Lethal Weapon (1987) is one of those films, the buddy cop genre at its best with comedy and action so good it spawned three more films. Talk of a fifth film has been rumored on line for a while but it looks like people got tired of waiting and rather than dust off the actors that are probably "too old for this sh*t" they put the franchise in reboot mode. In the TV version we have Damon Wayans playing Danny Glover's character Roger Murtaugh. This version of Murtuagh is still over the hill but has a libido that needs attention. He has a family, just like in the films but new in this version is a newborn. While he is not nearing retirement, he has suffered a stroke and would rather be alive for his family in the long run. Not too old and crotchety like Glover's Murtaugh but still a like-able character for the show. The TV version ...

The Strain catch-up: Big Red Worm!

Everybody has a plan for their own personal win. That is what this season of The Strain has shown us so far, with the exception of Setrakian and Fet who are fighting for mankind. Both Eph and Quinlan sort of unite since their goals more closely align. The Lumen gets stolen, to lure The Master so Quinlan can kill him and Eph can save his son. Quinlan Photo: FX What comes of their plan reveals a lot about The Master and Quinlan's past. First, we know more about why Quinlan is not like the other "Stragoi", he's pretty much what Blade is to vampires in the Marvel Universe. He is also considered a part of a prophecy that is said to end The Master's plans. In his attempt to kill The Master, we see the true form of the Master. This disease is based on a hive mentality and all hives have a leader they follow, fans have known this since the first few episodes. Those little white worms, enter the bloodstream to make more white worms. In doing so, the host beco...

Hush (2016) Review

Hush is a psychological thriller about a young woman living in an isolated area who happens to be deaf. Sarah, played by Kate Siegel plays Maggie, a writer that for some reasons in her personal life takes to living alone. She seems to be doing well outside of suffering from writer's block and maybe some loneliness. She has friends and neighbors that check in on her and care enough about her to offer space for her to live should she come back to the big city. Writer's block and loneliness become the least of her worries when an insane man played by John Gallagher, Jr. murders her friend and begins to toy with her with the intention of eventually killing her too. There was some reminiscent feeling of the film Extremities (1986)   with Farrah Fawcett and James Russo where the situation is similar, home invasion against a woman living alone but the added character trait of Maggie being deaf leads to this film being a bit more chilling. Hush is rated 'R' for vi...

Throwback Review: To Live and Die in LA (1985)

Poster Some movies were just too cool in the 80's. So cool, they may have not gotten the recognition they deserve until they were put on cable TV. To Live and Die in LA is one of those movies starring William Petersen of CSI and everyone's favorite most handsome bad guy in film, Willem Dafoe. Los Angeles, where almost everything in movies happens (or New York) has a serious counterfeiting operation going on. Rick Masters, played by Dafoe is the head of the operation and during a sting kills the mentor of the protagonist, Richard Chance (Petersen). Chance isn't having it he goes on his own to find his friends killer and bring down the counterfeiting operation no matter what, even if he has to break the rules. Chance has a hot girlfriend that is also an informant who lies around naked most of the day. It's the 80's and an 'R' rated film so those things were necessary in action films back then. Anyway, he has help from a newer, younger by the book part...

Hands of Stone (2016) Review

Hands of Stone (2016) is the film based on the true story of Roberto Duran. A story of how combat sports changed one man's life and helped him overcome odds in a difficult time. Boxing films are often about making a come back. Overcoming adversity is a common theme in them but sometimes the story can get a little sidelined and this film unfortunately falls victim to that. It is still a great film about one of the best times in boxing's history. However, the story of Roberto Duran told by his trainer, Ray Arcel played by Robert De Niro made it a little hard to follow the narrative. While all the things and people involved in Duran's life probably could stand alone as their own film, this film tried very hard to squeeze it all in. Because of that, you may find yourself asking where certain characters that pop up midway through the film are coming from. Even if you are not that into boxing, if you grew up in the 70's and 80's the fights between Duran and ...

The Strain is back

The end of the summer horror shows are making their way back to your small screen. The Strain returned last Sunday and picks up right when we left off with The Master chasing the Lumen, the people of New York fighting for their way of life, or fleeing, and Eph Goodweather going back to the bottle while still trying to save his son and the world. Things are really falling apart for Eph, but he is still trying to win and get his son back. His son seems to be the leverage The Master knows could get the Lumen and as Eph seems like he is looking for any means to get his son back, it might not be long before Eph makes a lot of people mad. Fet and Setrakian are still and always seem to be fighting the good fight. Even if they disagree on who they should trust, they still seem to trust each other. It was a good premier episode, some other characters are probably going to some more screen time in episode two. Even though The Strain coming back means summer is pretty much over, we...
