Coast-2-Coast Combat Hour: Jon Jones

It is the best mistaken identity story ever. Jon Jones has been taking a lot of heat meant for troubled former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones for some time now. Jones' experience in handling the mean tweets he gets by accident is probably the best story on how to handle mean, grumpy trolling online ever. Some people can get offended or even scared, but Jones handles it with comedy and through his experiences not only has the self-proclaimed geek found a sport he actually enjoys, but he is making a lot of new friends in the process too. Benson Henderson opens up on move to Bellator

Welcome to the family @BensonHenderson #BellatorNation pic.twitter.com/OT7YVYdB74 — Scott Coker (@ScottCoker) February 1, 2016 Benson Henderson recently did an interview with Newsday.com and talked about his move to Bellator. The interview is pretty detailed and he is not someone that has ever been shy about his opinions. If anything it was informative on how MMA fighters have to negotiate their terms for the work they do in the cage. One of the things that made a "huge impact" on his decision to leave was the Reebok deal. If you listened to our podcast last fall, we had a financial analyst look at the deal and break down some numbers for the pay-outs. Henderson gave his own break down in his interview with Newsday and said he was losing out. “That made a huge, huge impact on the deal. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t play into the deal. Reebok deal, we’ll see how it plays out, it’s playing out to mediocre fanfare so far. For me, I’m one of the fighters who los...

Funny Sage Northcutt parody

For the record, I think Sage Northcutt has the potential to be great. He's young enough and talented enough to build his skill set and grow as a martial artist. I said so in the latest podcast , and his loss in Newark, NJ or any fighter's loss is s good learning experience. HOWEVER...this is still pretty funny. Rarely is there ever an opportunity to reference a horror film and mash it with MMA when its not related to the tiny bit of violence that happens in competition. This parody is using the scene from Pet Semetery (1989) to point to the loss of one of the fighters the UFC was trying to market to fans as the next big thing. Jon Jones due in court again

The best light heavyweight to date in MMA is due back in court again this week after driving without a license, registration, or proof of insurance. Can we assume he made an honest mistake and simply forgot these items? Hopefully that is the case, but his record of automobile related incidents may not sit well with him in the court room. When courts see something that seems like familiar behavior, they tend to not let much slide. See the news footage below: Let's hope this doesn't ruin another pay-per-view. But more so, lets hope he has not lost his way as his in-cage performances are great for the sport. Opinion: Bad homework done to argue against MMA in New York

You really have to do your homework if you're going to argue for, or against something. You have do even more if you are to be taken seriously and not fuel your own agenda. Deborah Glick, assembly member of the 66th district recently wrote a post against lifting the ban on MMA in New York for "The Villager" and tried to paint the sport as unsafe. Ms. Glick did this by citing a study from an issue of The American Journal of Sports Medicine from 2014. She did not provide a link to the study, which means she was referring to an actual paper article from two years ago she may have had some lackey dig up. This is what she wrote: "The attempt to sanitize MMA is betrayed by the facts. According to a recent study in the March 21, 2014, issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, about one-third of professional MMA matches end in a knockout or a technical knockout. A technical knockout occurs when a fight is stopped by a referee who determines that a fighter is...

The UFC is blowing up Las Vegas with fights on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with a lot of people in the same division occupying the same space. There is bound to be plenty of trash talk between former, current, and future opponents sitting in the same room. Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes, Conor McGregor and New Jersey's own Frankie Edgar will be on hand for a press conference that has all their eyes on the Featherweight Crown. Cathal Pendred retires from MMA

Cathal Pendred (17-4-1) announced his retirement today on social media. The Irish fighter has usually been on the same card as Conor McGregor and lost his last two fights in the UFC.  At 28-years-old most fighters are in their physical prime, but Pendred cited lack of desire to compete as his reason for calling it a career. “I now find my passion is no longer what it was and I feel that it is time for me to move on. I have other interests that I want to pursue. The time is right to close one door and open another”-Cathal Pendred Pendred received a lot of negativity over his decision win against Sean Spencer back at UFC Fight Night 59 in Boston, when it seemed Spencer won the judges favored Pendred who was considered a local favorite. Even though the consensus is that Spencer was robbed, Pendred had nothing to do with it. Fighters go in and fight that is what Pendred did and loved to do. What happens outside the cage is separate from what goes on inside and hopefully ...

Who should Holly Holm fight next?

After winning the title from the seemingly unbeatable Ronda Rousey, a rematch between her and Holly Holm was a popular subject at the post fight presser. However, Miesha Tate was initially set to face Rousey again before Holm was picked over a third bout with Tate. A smart move since both Rousey and Holm were undefeated before UFC 193. When the subject of a rematch was brought up after Rousey's loss, it was said it makes sense to have Holm and Rousey fight again. Both Dana White and Holm seemed to agree, and Rousey most likely wants it too. What should be next for Holm after #UFC193 ? We know what they said makes sense, but what do you want? — Carbazel MMA (@Carbazel) November 15, 2015 The results are varied and by no means a large enough population to know what all MMA fans want, but Tate is still ranked number one in the UFC and she seems to have been shelved. So do you want to see what makes sense? Or, do you want Tate to get one more shot at whoever hold...

UFC issues statement on Cro Cop

This week one of the best strikers in MMA announced his retirement .With that came another bout on a UFC card that would have to be removed. The day after Filipovic announced his retirement the UFC released a statement on the matter. It said that bout was canceled due to a "potential" violation of the USADA anti-doping policy. Suspending someone for a potential violation seems a bit odd, but does it take away from Filipovic's legacy? Probably not. At 41 years old and numerous injuries he mentioned taking many medications for pain management in his retirement announcement . It was said his opponent, Anthony Hamilton would be fighting at a later date, on another card. Read the full statement here . UFC Statement on Mirko Cro Cop |UFC.com Photo: TJ De Santis/ Sherdog.com
