10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) review

Some monsters are big, scary, and inhuman. However, there are some monsters that look the same as you and me. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)is a thriller directed by Dan Trachtenberg and produced by J.J Abrams. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallaghner.

The movie starts out as a young woman named Michelle (Winstead), who is running away from her fiancé after an argument. Driving away, distracted by a phone call by the guy who she is leaving, she gets into a car accident that knocks her out cold. When she wakes up, she finds herself in a bunker that creeps her out. Not knowing whether there's an actual danger inside, or outside, she does everything she can to find answers.

First of all, this movie doesn't waste time to get into the story. It doesn't worry about other characters, or other little details, because it dives right into the main plot. Second of all, the three actors all did incredible jobs, especially John Goodman, as he just knocks it out of the park. And last but certainly not least, this movie provides the scares without a doubt. It's a film that keeps you wondering, and keeps you biting your nails. 

The last Cloverfield movie was more of a horror/monster film, as this new Cloverfield movie is more psychological than anything else. In most cases, scary movies can focus too much on the gory, but not enough on the story. However, 10 Cloverfield Lane offers a solid story with actual substance to it.  

What makes this film great is the leading lady. Her character is not just your average screamer when something bad happens. No, she tackles obstacles and thinks things through like a professional.

Overall, without giving too much away, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a thrilling movie that has a backbone. For some, it may be disappointing depending on the expectations. This is not a straight up sequel to Cloverfield. If anything, it's a soft reboot, just in the same universe. Still, this a secretive, scary movie you have to see for yourself.
