The OA (2016) Netflix: Review

Netflix Release Poster Netflix does more good stuff than bad. There are a few in-betweeners but otherwise if you see a review here it is either because we like it, or want to warn you about it. The OA is a little of both if you have the patience to get through it. Not sure where to begin, the show will interest you in the beginning but in its attempt to go deeper it may lose you. Comparisons to Stranger Things have been made on other reviews and frankly, we don't see it. The story starts off well but it is a hard thing to watch and keep your interest once you start wondering where they want to go with it. A girl who was missing for seven years, once blind now returns with the ability to see and do other things. She's a little annoying, whether that is on purpose or not might be best answered by Brit Marling who plays the title character Prairie AKA The OA. It's a little annoying that she introduces herself as "The OA" and no one thinks to ask her wh...

A Christmas Horror Story (2015) Review

Krampus started something last year. Making horror themed Christmas movies wasn't really a thing until some historic folklore and the creative mind behind Trick R' Treat brought the Pre-Christian Alpine folkloric creature to American audiences. Now, you will find memes, collectibles, and "ugly Christmas Sweaters" with the horned figure on it. Then there's the 'B' movie, straight to video films that find a way to make clever use of the idea. A Christmas Horror Story does that, and stars William Shatner, and Zoe De Grand Maison but they manage to twist it into a modified anthology tale that has a pretty decent gift at the end. An asylum, a strange kid, Krampus, and a problem Santa has at his factory with some of his elves are the stories told almost simultaneously in this film. While they do sort of come together at the end, the way the film plays out may confuse some audiences. The film is not rated but there are some sexually suggestive themes and ...

Cooties (2015) Review

Rabid, diseased, zombie-like apocalyptic films and TV shows are all the craze now. Putting a funny spin on them is probably the second biggest craze when trying to jump on the zombie band wagon. Cooties is one of the films that does it right with a great outbreak story and the right amount of horror and humor to keep it interesting. Elijah Wood plays Clint Hadson, a struggling writer working on his first horror novel to try and get out of his mom's house. He takes a job as a substitute teacher to make ends meet and winds up working in his hometown elementary school in the town of "Fort Chicken". A clever name for the school because of the source of the infection that turns kids into rabid little monsters. The  films opening shows infected chicken nuggets being made and distributed to schools which leads to the outbreak. For some reason, the virus only infects those that have not gone through puberty so the popular kids snack has the potential to infect a lot of kids...

Better Late Than Never Review: The Drop (2014)

The Drop is one of those films that might have escaped you had it not been James Gandolini's final appearance in a film. It is a rare crime story, more about a neighborhood and its past than it is about an actual crime. There are gangsters and all the likely ingredients for a film about crime, but the characters and the acting are what should draw you to this film. Tom Hardy plays Bob Saginowski, a peaceful bartender that seems to live an uneventful life since working for his cousins bar who used to be a connected guy, Marvin played by Gandolfini. Marvin "Marv" ceded ownership of his bar to Chechen gangsters who still use his place for money drops. Both Marv and Bob seem a bit sentimental for the old days, but Bob is more accepting of his new role in their Brooklyn neighborhood where everything takes place. The bar Bob and Marv work in gets robbed and that pretty much put things in motion in the film that will tie events together making some of the reactions from t...
