Mid90s (2018) Review

In today’s pop-culture, climate and zeitgeist nostalgia reigns supreme. From movies to music, the past has put a stranglehold on the public’s obsession with remembrance. At times it can feel overwhelming and even annoying at the amount of old content that is being refurbished into new content. However, taking a trip down memory lane is not always negative. In fact, there are many stories of the past that may have been glossed over and never told. For those who relished in the world of hip-hop music and skateboarding whether it be in the 1990s or the 2000s, the film Mid90s will be a welcomed addition back to the world of Nostalgia. Mid90s was written and directed by Jonah Hill who would be making his directorial debut. Hill is best known for being in comedies such as 2007’s comedy classic Superbad , Get Him to the Greek and 21 Jump Street . However, Hill has also been a part of critically acclaimed films such as Martin Scorcese’s The Wolf of Wallstreet , 2011’s Moneyball and ...

Books for MMA Fans

These aren’t instructionals or “how to” books on MMA, these are books about the sport’s history and culture that I have read over the years as a fan and covering the sport. I had the pleasure of meeting, training with, and interviewing some of the authors and I always recommend the books to folks in conversation. With the holidays coming, I figured I would compile a list for folks looking for something a bit deeper than an MMA DVD or tee shirt.

Better Late Than Never Review: A Quiet Place (2018)

Click image to watch on Amazon Prime John Krasinski directs and stars in this film with Emil Blunt about a family that has learned to survive in a world where most of the population has been wiped out by creatures that have nearly impervious exoskeletons and hunt humans by tracking them with their highly developed hearing. The film touches on family sticking together through tough times, and they don't come tougher than what happens in this movie. It is actually a quick watch but interesting enough that a sequel is being teased. Without spoiling too much, there is not much explanation as to why, how, or when the creatures got there or what type of resolution, if any you get after seeing the film. Well, there is but it may take more than one viewing to catch how everything came to be in the film. This may, or may not spoil things a bit for you but it was originally supposed to be part of The Cloverfield franchise . That may interest or deter you from se...

Stan Lee Will Be Missed

Anyone that has ever been to the movies for anything Marvel related, thought about "great power" and the responsibility that comes with it got the sad news that one of the greatest storytelling minds of out time has passed away. His ideas are what has driven and influenced what folks refer to as Marvel's Universe and he has made a cameo in nearly all the films related to the characters he had a hand in creating. Mr. Lee passed away on November 12 and his influence has reached many people that have built a career on an industry he could be considered the father of. One of the most touching sentiments on his passing was from one of his biggest fans, that got to work with Lee. Kevin Smith's Instagram post on Lee's passing is probably the best words written, that describes how many Lee's fans feel.

View From The Hawk's Nest: UFC 230

View from The Hawk’s Nest An event review from a fan's perspective By Matthew “MMAHAWK” Hawkins UFC 230 All photos by Matthew Hawkins For the first time in UFC history held an event on November 3rd. While this doesn’t mean much to most of you, for me it marked the first event ever to fall on my birthday. My 40th birthday no less! On top of all that, the octagon was going to be set up in New York City under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden (MSG) which made this a must see event for me. That also meant moving the Hawk’s Nest across country for my 48th live UFC event, UFC 230. Fight week would begin with the UFC 232 press conference. It was held at MSG in the smaller Hulu theatre. The two highly anticipated bouts for the end of the year show, Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson and Cris Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes, would take center stage. For those that have never attended a UFC presser it consists of around 30 minutes of media questions for the fighters and ...

Better Late Than Never Review :Halloween (2018)

The film that has taken a stranglehold on the horror movie community has finally arrived. Since it was announced that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride would be taking the helm on a brand new Halloween film, fans have been following every single step of the process. When it was announced that Jamie Lee Curtis would be returning to star in the movie and original creator John Carpenter would come aboard in an advisory role while doing the film’s score that’s when the anticipation for the movie grew exponentially. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are best known for comedies such as Pineapple Express, Your Highness and collaborating on the HBO series Vice Principals. Needless to say many were apprehensive as to how the duo would handle a horror film, not to mention one with such an iconic character as Michael Myers. However, the blessing given by John Carpenter over the script eased the minds of fans.  But with now, over ten films in the Halloween series even the most loyal...
