Get Out (2017) Review

Daniel Kaluuya stars as Chris in this modern, horror themed take on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner but the film goes way deeper than that. Written and Directed by Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame the film is not without its humorous moments, but the underlying fears of people, in general, are addressed in this film. It's a lot deeper and bigger than race more about addressing the many small fears adults have. There is a scene in Get Out where the protagonist is asked to explain "the African American experience." This film feels like something Stephen King would have created had he be able to answer that question. Lucky for fans seeing the psychological thriller, they get a nice dose of the answer along with some cultural self-reflection for all audiences. There is also some comedic elements in the film that help give fans a breather before scenes of discomfort play. That is not to say the film is overly gory, but relatable discomfort in social situations many c...

View From The Hawk's Nest: Bellator 172

The following originally appears at The MMA Community forum and is published here with the permission of the author, Matt Hawkins. He wrote about his experience from Bellator 172 after appearing on this site's podcast , prior to the event so he was kind enough to share what he and other fans went through while Bellator was doing the best to save the fight card from March 4. Please read his story and comment below. View From The Hawk's Nest An Event Review from a Fan's Perspective By Matthew Hawkins Follow @MMAHAWK21 All photos by Matthew Hawkins Say it ain't so! “Say It ain’t so”! That was the message I received on my phone in my hotel room, while on my UBER app scheduling a ride to the SAP Center for Bellator 172. What was supposed to be the glorious stateside return of one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, Fedor Emelianenko, quickly became a depressing reality that the fight would be canceled as the news of Matt Mitrione’s medical issu...

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) Review

The sequel to the 2014 film John Wick came out the weekend before Valentines Day. If you have seen the first film, you know that there is likely some purposeful irony in releasing it that weekend. Wick is a man of focus and sheer will, or so the characters in both films keep saying and this sequel gives fans more of the same in the second chapter of the story of Mr. Wick. Reeves returns as the brooding hitman of the underworld that has a code of honor, John Wick. It has been an ongoing theme since the first film that Wick has wanted out of the life since he found there could be a peaceful life with a woman he loved. However, he keeps getting pulled back in no matter how often he tries to bury his past behind him. The action is on par with the first film as well as the theme of the story fo trying to retire. This new film shows us more of the underworld and the mysterious Continental Hotel that the assassins in Wick's world respect as their own private government. Ian McShan...

Bellator 172 Breakdown with The MMA Hawk

MMA Hawk in NYC for UFC 205 You ever get writer's block? When you have to write a breakdown for a match where anything can happen it helps to have an intelligent conversation about MMA with someone that has been following the sport as long as it has been around. One of MMA's G.O.A.T's , Fedor Emelianenko faces Matt Mitrione at Bellator 172 in California at the SAP Center Saturday, Feb. 18 and both men can finish each other at any time. This is a job for the "MMA Hawk" Matt Hawkins who was able to help me talk about the match, reasons either man could win or lose, and catch up on some UFC stuff since we last met in November for UFC 205. Listen to their breakdown here:

The Santa Clarita Diet (Review)

The comedy/horror themed Netflix original The Santa Clarita Diet is surprisingly enjoyable. The delivery of comedy from Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore (playing Mr. and Mrs. Coby) is very well done in situations where stress should be high. It's been called a zombie film and it is hinted at that Mrs. Coby's condition is that of a zombie virus. However, she does not take on the traditional zombie form right away. She still looks normal, she is conscious of her actions and still goes to work. The only thing she needs is to feast on human flesh which is where most of the comedy comes from. Her husband is very supportive of her and helps her feed even though he is very uncomfortable with what they are doing. The comedy chemistry works really well between Barrymore and Olyphant which is kind of a stretch for Olyphant. Coming off of Justified this role is a good change for him and he does a really good job with his comedic reactions. Don't let the terms folks use...
