BBC America announced that they will not renew Copper for a third season this week and this Sundays finale will be the final episode. According to the LA Times, "The series starring Tom Weston-Jones, was hailed as BBC America's highest-rated drama ever when it was renewed for a second season last fall. But whatever buzz the show had has been surpassed by BBC America's new science fiction thriller, "Orphan Black," which will return for its second season in April."
The show takes place (or took place) during the end of the Civil War and after the New York City Draft riots in the same location that was featured in Gangs of New York, the Five Points. So it was a heavy drama and had some interesting characters including a freed slave character Matthew Freeman that was played by Ato Essandoh who was one of my favorite characters on the show. He was not playing the stereotypical slave turned former slave role, this character was well read and educated in forensic science so he was almost Sherlockian in his helping the main character with most of his cases. Tom Weston-Jones plays the main protagonist of the show, Kevin "Corky" Corcoran, a rugged Irish immigrant cop in New York City. It's a shame it's going to be cancelled because it was a nice dramatic historical piece and other than Hell on Wheels, we don't get a lot of history in our television these days outside of the History Channel.
The LA Times article says in a statement from BBC America they felt," After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story." With all the reality TV it's nice to have shows with some culture in them and historically based dramas, one would hop they would inspire people to learn more. If you haven't caught it, look for it on +Netflix or on demand because the show was good and its a shame it got pulled.
